I came across a comment on the web that stated that after Jesus was crucified and rose, the priests/"upper management responsible" couldn't kill off enough Christians quick enough to keep it from spreading. So they of course co-opted it, and moved themselves up into the positions of power and went from there. Lets face it, you can take about any large entity, whether a spin-off religion like Lutheran, Islam (?), Protestant or similar, or even a home-grown company that went past the original owners into corporation, and see the same pattern of takeover.
Long and short of it, the "power hungry-don't give an F about their fellow man" types seem to congregate and work together to eventually turn anything into a monster. As soon as they start twisting the truth, it appears to go downhill from there.
