God is Love. The consequence of sin is death (spiritually then physically). Adam wasn't supposed to ever lose either. Youngster away from God and you step to the devil. It is he who kills. Throughout the entire Bible only the devil has been responsible for death. Old testament doesn't appear that way because Jesus Christ came and exposed the devils kingdom. Old testament people didn't know so they just layed it at God's feet until Christ made it clear.
