Impeding the strait would likely bring a massive spike in oil prices that would flow through to U.S. consumers.

Less now than in the 80's, but it would still cause an increase in prices. But I don't think it will last, if Iran mines the straights we can take out there navy pretty darned fast, and its too wide/deep to try physically blocking it.
