This is not realy relevant but years ago I sudied this area. To the south west there are circles in the desert that have a very strange patern. there are small circles and big ones. Some appear older than the mountains themselves to the West. No idea what they are but some reminded me of lights pointing to a landing strip. As I recal the small circles are 1/2 the size of the large ones and the spacing does not seem random. I think they are large enough to not be seen from the ground.
I went to google earth to see what I think you are talking about. They look like experimental bore holes and small explosives were used for conducting a massive underground radar survey. The entire mountain ranges to southwest are just peppered with those holes. A near grid pattern makes sense to me if I'm correct about what I'm seeing. The explosions in the bore holes echo back data to sensors, telling the ground composition, hollows, etc.
