I worked in transportation / shipping back then, and during one of the debates they were talking about our trade deficit with Japan and what was Clinton going to do about it? I kept yelling at the TV "no, China!". I saw it becoming an issue that long ago. 🙄
During the Clinton presidency, we refused to buy anything made in China. Then we would buy only stuff made in USA. Then that became impractical and difficult.
I was doing some design work at the time and the electronics industry was leaving the country in droves. I needed high quality components and could specify them, but you could see the trends and they weren't good for our electronics industries.
By 1960 the Japanese had taken much of American Toy industry. And was starting on the "Transistor Radios" . Even before WW 2 they were doing our steel recycling so this trend goes back to even earlier.
