I remember the Doomsday Clock from the Cold War era. Self-righteous and self-proclaimed is a good characterization. Seems to me it was an invention of crypto-commies, i.e. pinkos. The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists (as well as Union Concerned Scientists) were advocates of unilateral disarmament. By our side, not the Soviets.
Then again if you tell me it was the KGB - or CIA - behind the Clock I wouldn't rule it out. In becoming aware of so many strings being pulled from behind the scenes by intelligence agencies it's hard to take anything at face value anymore.
