I think years of non stop birth control pills unbalanced my system badly, and led to some very large fibroids. Terrible heavy periods, which the “gynocologist” told me were normal. (!) I didn’t do anything, just went off the pills and slowly started finding healthier ways to eat and live. Nothing radical. Menopause in my 50s solved the heavy period problem. Your wife does not need a hysterectomy, but do research natural treatments.
