Lyme's disease (supposedly)"escaped" from the biolab on Plumb Island. The infected tics attached themselves to deer that swam off the island to the mainland shore in the area of Lyme, Connecticut, where the first cases of the disease started to show up. Deer can in fact swim up to 8 mile, so this is a very plausible thing.
