If the government can tell gay people that they can't get married then that turns marriage into a privilege that is granted by the government. Put another way, if government says gay people CAN'T get married then the only reason straight couples CAN get married is because the government says it's ok for them. As much as some might believe that marriage should be restricted to male/female couples (and even if they are right), it's not government's role to get involved at all. 100 years ago we didn't have marriage certificates in this country...but people still got married. We don't need the government's permission to get married. Nobody does. That's absurd. And if two men want to get "married", you can believe that's not proper, you can even be correct that it's not proper, but it's still none of your business and it's none of the government's business either.
