EV Gravy Train Dries Up: Rivian Announces Layoffs as Tax Credits Expire
EV maker Rivian has announced a lay off as the company prepares for the end of federal EV tax credits and a challenging economic landscape. The company beat Elon Musk's Tesla in bringing an EV pickup truck to the market, but has yet to prove it can succee...
I briefly considered applying for a job at Scout - they're going to remanufacture the old International Scout as a new brand. But it's going to be electric.
As someone who daily drives a similar vehicle (square Jeep Cherokee XJ), I couldn't see that being successful - if it were sold as a practical utility vehicle it doesn't make sense as electric, if it were sold as a luxury faux utility EV, well the market is already super-saturated and slowed to a crawl. I don't see how they can succeed unless they switch to ICE power or maybe hybrid.
Kinda the same deal with Rivian. Too expensive to be practical, if an EV truc has a chance of being practical, and the market of expensive faux-tility suvs is saturated and most of the competition are long-established brands with extensive dealer and service networks and reliable resale history.
I actually work at International and this had been pushed so hard internally, even though we've never built EVs in my plant. These would have been a huge bust. Even our executive team said there has never been an infrastructure to support mass amounts of EVs and especially trucks going large distances. Glad we're all hopefully moving away from this madness.
I didn't realize International was involved. I thought they just sold the Scout name to some new org.
I think the time might be right for a reincarnation of the Scout - at least a version close to what it used to be. My Dad had one and it was a beast until it rusted away. Always wanted one but they're hard to find these days.
Yeah the old scouts were absolute tanks but everything is so cheaply made these days this woulda been a let down compared to what it used to be. Id be all for a gas version of it though. We have old pictures up everywhere of scouts and occasionally we have events where people bring drive them in.
