The answer is really simple. At the crux of it, all we have to do is follow Jesus' teachings, which are explained plainly in the gospel.
But religion got institutionalised as Catholic church, with the Jewish influence always in the shadows. Even when Martin Luther broke from the Catholic church and ended up creating protestant offshoots, it didn't really change much in terms of going back to basics. it just replaced one belief system with another, and in the process gave rise to a lot of secret societies that haunt us today.
But thats only at the basic level. The evangelicals who founded America have had the idea of the end times and the revelations always in the back of their mind. I am making a series about this, so I wont say too much, but its a different level of matrix that has to be broken out of.
