Reading an article on neurology today, I came across something that explains partially why they must keep us divided. It read as follows: "If you have enough experiences with members of an 'out-group' (one you've decided is threatening), you'll find that they're actually non-threatening. This is known to psychologists as contact hypothesis---meaning if different groups interact, they become more non-threatening."
