In the old days no fence was needed,even if you lived in the country. The deer have killed off casual gardening. We used to have apple trees by our farm house,and several died,so my dad tried to replant them. He even put up T post and 4 ft heavy wire. The deer still killed them. We currently have a huge over population of deer in a lot of areas. People are not hunting as much as they used to.

When I was a kid most everyone had gardens and no one had fences.....
