I used to work with homeless thru our church in WA a lot when I was there. I was even one of the coordinators. I can tell you some fall on hard time and became homeless. They have excellent jobs but hospital bills, losing work, divorce, any number of problems.

I didn't hear about the being injected with needles. I would not be surprised though.
