Over the last few decades, it feels like we've gone through a bunch of changes that have completely shifted how parents raise their kids. A lot of people have slowly given up the responsibility of really watching what their kids are doing or keeping them safe.
I get it though. With prices going up everywhere, most families need both parents working just to stay afloat. Everyone's tired, stressed, and trying to make it through the week. It's easier to hand a kid a screen and get a little peace. It started with TVs, then video games, and now it's phones and tablets.
What's frustrating is that there are tools to help parents keep their kids safe online, but most don't bother to learn or use them. Instead, we're seeing the government step in and use “child protection” as the reason to watch everyone's online activity. I think most of us know that's not the real reason, but people either don't care or don't want to admit it.
I'm not saying it's all our fault. We've been pushed in this direction for a long time. Still, it's hard to watch it happen and not feel a little sick about where things are headed.
