Last June a PE firm purchased the company I worked for. They brought a bunch of us in to a meeting and said thank you, and bye bye, here is a 2 month severance. I was devastated and shocked. I thought “it won’t be a problem, I’ll get a job right away.” 4 months it took me.
The company I work for now, when I applied the salary was 15k less than what I was making prior. I was worried, but put pen to paper and figured a way to make it work. When I went in to sign the offer, they had changed the salary and reduced it by 15k. They said sorry, but as of January 1 this will be the new pay plan. It’s a commission base too. My stomach dropped because even though I will make commission, the sales process is long and I am onboarding for months.
Long story short, I make 30k less. It sucks! Everything has gone up. My property taxes. Homeowners and auto insurance. Propane.
I am making my own bread every Saturday and buy a frozen bone in turkey breast from Aldi, to have for sandwiches for the week. I lived off eggs and toast all summer.
I was chopping leaves on my mower yesterday and I felt humbled. Every generation must suffer in some form. I guess it is time to appreciate how we must deny ourselves simple pleasures we are accustomed too.
