He could have gone himself, or invited him to the castle if he din't want to kill him. Instead he sends the group of guys who is literally trained to kill, so he forfits the moral high ground (again)
This guy was a POS who killed his own virtuous son, and he is held up as some kind of positive example - when really his life should serve as a warning.
What your forgetting though is that David did not want Absalom killed, his general, Joab, did that on his own.
