In the old days, pills were soft, rolled up into a small ball, and then coated with either sugar, starch, or, for the rich, gold dust. As they were soft, they were actually very hard to swallow.
I learned this in a college class. I know it may seem pedantic, but I am in favor of proper terminology.
It's not totally irrelevant if it's in widespread use. The meanings of words change over time, pills now is a catch-all for all the things you listed. I'd say 'correcting' people on this is very pedantic.
