Asherah was worshipped by the Canaanites. In 1st & 2nd Kings, it explains how a couple of the kings allowed some of their wives to continue worshipping as Canaanites. Those kings allowed a bit of mixing between the two religions and provoked God. King Josiah fixed where they had erred and brought them back to God.
