They've been "testing" it here for decades. White lines spreading out everywhere. But my neighbors laugh when I point it out. "It's just water vapor". Yeah, white, powdery water vapor that persists for days.
The air above you NEVER stays in one place for "days".
That's simply not possible. The air above you is constantly moving, usually from west to east in America, maybe NW to SE, and we have the jet stream blowing at hundreds of miles per hour up higher.
So never does the block of air over your city ever stay still.
You are just not watching close enough, the sky is a big river, and constantly moving. You may be seeing different contrails from other jets that flew way north west of you a day ago, or something like that, but you do NOT have a permanent block of stagnant air above you.... Ever...
The air does indeed move. The white "mist" slowly drifts out over the Mediterranean, heading for the mainland. Meanwhile more lines are sprayed to the south of the mountains and they, too, spread out and drift north.
