The reason behind this was because the then King (Henry VIII) wanted a annulment because his wife hadn't given him a male heir. The Pope said NO, so Henry declared himself head of the church in England. He also confiscated all the land and wealth of the monasteries.

His son, Edward VI made additional reforms that made the church more Protestant.
