How come I feel something is not quite right in this story?

Did France take slaves from Algeria?

[AI] France did not establish a system to take people from Algeria and enslave them in the way the transatlantic slave trade operated. In fact, France formally abolished slavery in Algeria in 1848, following its conquest of the region.

I thought they just did the imperialist/banking thing - it appears they tried for law and order, and NO slavery since 1848, when they colonized the place.
