Ari Marson claims to have met "Bishops" on horseback in Newfoundland before Lief arrived. There are MicMacs who claim descent from Chinese merchant explorers (Admiral Zheng He) who lost imperial funding mid-voyage. There's also St. Brendan of Ireland who wrote an astonishing account of his voyage to Newfoundland in 550AD.
