I always thought that if he did get murdered then the WH:s (and Q) seemed to not be in control and since I'm optimistic and trust that there is a plan then he must have been removed to a safehouse for questioning and safekeeping.

Suicide is least likely, murdered second most and the most likely is that the WH:s got him in time.
