Used to ride bikes to the Waterslide and Malibu Grand Prix in Northridge, CA during the summer in the early 80s. Me: 10. My brother: 7. Three miles away from home. Would pay the fee and stay at the Waterslide park all day long. There was an Arby’s next door. Would have a Beef ‘n Cheddar, fries and a coke for like $2.99. Would play Tempest, Paperboy and a host of other video games in the Malibu Grand Prix arcade. Today’s children, unfortunately, don’t know how much freedom Gen X had as kids. We were raised to be self sufficient and independent. I feel lucky today for that independence.
