The Catholic church classifies martyrdom in several different ways.
"Red" martyrdom refers to the fact that the individual has shed blood for their faith.
Technically, this would mean the person could be considered for beatification without having to perform a miracle.
There are other forms of martyrdom designated by colors which, do not involve the person being killed or hurt. They involve things like denial of earthly things and more aesthetic practices.
Edited to add: Technically -- there is a supposition that the martyrdom must be done willingly but due to the fact that this is a child that probably would not be a consideration.

I see. It's such a bad case. Now I see why this could put a lot of people into the hospital.
