I call b.s. on this. I used to work at a port in Oakland about 30 years ago when the ships were a lot smaller. If a port worker heard kids screaming they could talk to the boss and very likely they'd stop operations to track it down. They would definitely investigate it. We did have a container in Vancouver BC that turned out to have people (Chinese refugees) in it once.
Not to mention, It's very loud when you have large cranes moving around, so the screaming would have to be extremely loud for longshoremen to hear it.
