Yeah - this is possible.

It provides cover for DJT in the whole mess and minimizes (to the extent possible) the media’s ability to frame things as a political witch-hunt being conducted by the DJT administration.

Obviously the media and the democrats are still trying to do that (frame as witch-hunt & paint DJT as a participant), but it does take away a lot of their ammo.

I do hope Massie is just playing his part.
