I don't know about the Knauss family but Slovenia is predictably a Slavic country.

Knauss geographical distribution: The roots lie in southern Germany (Württemberg, Alemannic dialect), and the name has been documented since at least 1515.

Variants: Known variants include Knaus, Knauß, Knous, Knause, Knouse, and Slavic forms such as Knavs.
