Basing in our national interest is currently the primary reason for continuing NATO. At the moment with Putin in power, we don’t have to really worry about Russia. But that could change. The US could defeat Russia in about 3 weeks. But only if we have the basing for our aircraft. Major ground war is obsolete. But the Army would be needed to defend the air bases.
Separate from defense, the military that is based in Europe gain a much better understanding of those countries. One has no idea how screwed up they are until you live there a while.
Also the countries were nicer, I think, when the Russians/Soviet Union was breathing down their necks.

Why would the USA have to fight with Russia? Russia is not a threat to the USA, they don't want war with the USA.
In fact, Russia could be ally of the USA because culturally and politically the USA and Russia share many similarities unlike the USA and Europe.
