In Michigan we have the Headley Amendment which limits the increase in taxes to 5% a year or the cost of living index whichever is less. Texas and other states that have a percentage tax based upon the estimated value of the home really need the Headley Amendment.
The Headley Amendment will save senior citizens homes so they can continue to live in them through retirement. When a home sells after the death or the election of the homeowner to sell the taxes are then reset to the prevailing sale price and then the Headley Amendment kicks in right away.
The amendment only applies for primary residents. If you have a cabin up north you pay a different rate that follows the value of the property.
