Trump lets some rats hang themselves by forcing them to defend themselves at first, which always leads to the truth coming out eventually. Looks to me like Trump knew, but put Lacivita out on a limb and forced him to either fight the allegations, jump to another branch (the RINO branch), or fall from grace. A fall from grace can always be redeemed, but jumping to the RINOs exposes the person's true character.
