On March 4, 2026, the U.S. Navy's submarine USS Charlotte sank the Iranian warship IRIS Dena using a Mark 48 torpedo while it was in international waters off the coast of Sri Lanka. This incident marked the first time since World War II that a U.S. submarine used a torpedo to sink an enemy ship.
