This cruise ship, the MV Hondius, a Dutch-flagged expedition ship, DEPARTED FROM ARGENTINA on April 1. Currently, the ship is moored off the coast of Cape Verde in the Atlantic Ocean. Today it is scheduled to head to the Canary Islands for investigation because Cape Verde authorities did not permit docking due to health concerns.

3 people have died and others have been hospitalized with symptoms of severe pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

This ship has been on a multi-week polar cruise that DEPARTED FROM ARGENTINA on April 1, stopping in Antarctica, South Georgia, and St. Helena before the illnesses occurred. This is where the Andes Mountain Range comes into play. This mountain range takes up a significant portion of Argentina.

AND this is the KICKER. There is an "Andes strain" of hantavirus, and this Andes strain (1 of at least 38 strains) is the ONLY known hantavirus strain capable of person-to-person transmission, AND this strain is primarily found in ARGENTINA and CHILE. It is known for causing Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) with a high mortality rate of around 30-40%.
