Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was a senior figure in the Tigray People's Liberation Front, the TPLF, an organization the US government has at various points listed in its Terrorist Exclusion designations. He didn't just hold a party card. He was a politburo member of the ruling faction during years when the TPLF-led government was credibly accused by Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and Genocide Watch of ethnic cleansing, mass detention, and torture of political opponents.
As Ethiopia's Health Minister from 2005 to 2012, he was accused by Dr. Lawrence Gostin and others of covering up three separate cholera epidemics by reclassifying them as "acute watery diarrhea" to protect tourism and political optics. People died because the outbreaks weren't properly reported to international health bodies. The man who hid epidemics is now the man running the global pandemic response.
As Foreign Minister, he oversaw the period when journalists, opposition figures, and members of the Amhara and Oromo ethnic groups were jailed, disappeared, or killed under anti-terrorism laws. He's the first WHO Director-General in history with no medical degree. His PhD is in community health, and his appointment was pushed hard by China after Ethiopia's strategic alignment with Beijing's Belt and Road expansion.
This is the man telling sovereign nations what their pandemic policies have to be. A former member of a designated terror-linked political-military organization, an accused epidemic cover-up artist, installed by geopolitical maneuvering, now wielding emergency authority over your body and your country.
