It's pointless because being a "liberal" really has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with the illusion that they, as a liberal, are more compassionate and hence, a "better" person than you. If they have to admit that they are wrong about any facet of their delusion -- then they lose their sense of moral superiority.
It took me years to figure it out and when I did -- well, I no longer have any liberal friends. The way I look at it is -- why would I want "friends" who draw their sense of self-esteem by feeling that they are more "enlightened", more "compassionate" and more "educated" than I am. To hell with them!
