They by election serve tje voters of their county. Many think they serve the beuracracy like hired police chiefs who answer to mayors and city managers. Im retired LE and verybdisappointed in maost of what I see police and deputies doing these days. Seems too many hires are not up to tje job. Power hungry and dumb.

Texas sheriffs placed under DHS control 2004ish under MOU due to 9/11 'national security risks' so MOST here are nothing more than corrupt deep state apparatus and absolutely involved in protecting the cartel economy at every level.

I have not seen the sheriff movement take hold or be successful. I talked to our sheriff after 2020 and she didn't want to do anything. Said it wasn't her job.
