What do you think the total cost is for damages that industry has done to the environment and Humanity? Mercury poisoning from gold mining. What is the global estimate needed to clean it all up as best as can be done regardless of cost?
It takes a while to develop the knowledge of toxicity. It was not well-established during the days of gold mining with mercury. Nor when I was growing up in the 1960s, when it was still possible to see a demonstration of mercury globules on a school desk in order to view a liquid metal. Nobody wanted to poison anybody, but the awareness did not then exist.
