The trial attorney was private. BUT, the appeal is with a public defender.
"Karmelo Anthony was represented by Mike Howard, a private criminal defense attorney, during his murder trial. Howard, who previously worked as a public defender but left to open a private practice, was retained by Anthony’s family using funds from a $600,000 online fundraiser. Howard’s defense team argued that Anthony acted in self-defense during the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf at a Frisco track meet, but a Collin County jury rejected this claim.
Following Anthony’s conviction and 35-year prison sentence, he filed an appeal claiming he was "penniless" and could not afford further legal representation. The court granted his request for a court-appointed attorney, assigning Donny Perales of Chesley & Perales to represent him during the appeal process. Anthony has been transferred to the Wallace Pack Unit in Texas to begin serving his sentence."
