Can you believe what Ruth Porat (President and CFO of Alphabet/Google) said.
She highlighted Google's quantum achievements, referencing their Willow chip (unveiled about a year and a half earlier). She said it enabled a computation in less than five minutes (or ~3-5 minutes in accounts) that would have taken the best supercomputer 10 septillion years.
"Septillion" here means 10^24 (one followed by 24 zeros); the user likely recalled it as "sextillion" (10^21), which is a common mix-up for such huge numbers.
She tied it to broader impacts like medical breakthroughs, nuclear fusion, and materials science, and emphasized U.S. leadership in quantum tech plus post-quantum cryptography for security.
This was during remarks at the Oval Office event where Trump signed orders to boost quantum computing R&D, aim for practical systems, develop quantum sensors/networks, and migrate government systems to post-quantum cryptography. Other tech leaders (e.g., from IBM) also spoke.
The event built on Google's earlier quantum supremacy claims (e.g., 2019 Sycamore chip), with Willow as a more recent example of massive speedup over classical supercomputers for specific hard problems.
J1D, I sure hope they beef up encryption also. A quantum computer would be able to crack in encryption scheme in minutes, maybe seconds.

Wow... that's crazy!
AND YOU HAVE JUST HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD SQUARE...
What these people are REALLY worried about is these quantum computers being able to break the BITCOIN ENCRYPTION KEYS!!!!!!
NOW, this is a headache I or anyone else in their right mind would NOT want to have.
Once these chips become available on the open market, ALL HELL IS GOING TO BREAK LOOSE, LIKE NO ONE HAS EVER SEEN!!!!
