The historic track record of the Militia at least Militia as the Author is describing isn’t particularly great to put it mildly. Certainly not completely Abysmal. But certainly not formations one would come to rely on to face down a column of advancing British Grenadiers. Which is generally why Baron Von Steuben was invited into Valley Forge.
The War of 1812 reinforced that point again. The Regular Army generally sported a better track record than their Militia counterparts. Which spurred the start of formalizing and pseudo professionalizing the State Militias that would ultimately prove to be far more effective in the Mexican War and later form the core of both sides armies in the Civil War.
You can argue philosophy, economics, and centralization versus decentralization till you’re blue in the face. But philosophical treatises on the potential threat of a professional army to liberty. Doesn’t stop your enemy with the professional army from running you through with a bayonet.
