OK, I have seen this before - it happens over fault lines, and thermally active areas - the ground gets heated from underneath, and in dry weather it's like a drying machine - all the water is wicked out and away- and the heat in the soil builds up, and makes swathes of forest just ripe and ready for combustion.
Maybe there was a timed arson attack, or maybe not.
