He is a trash person and should be held accountable, but when you are dealing with "the system," if you don't have a lawyer you will be steamrolled into oblivion. Saying why get a lawyer is like saying if you have nothing to hide you shouldn't care about the government reading your mail.
Saying this as someone who has had to deal with the MASSIVE hammer that is the judicial system multiple times.
