A dignified transfer is a solemn military procedure used to transfer the remains of fallen service members from an aircraft to a waiting transport vehicle.
It is conducted to honor the fallen and prioritize respect, privacy, and individualized care, and is carried out for every U.S. military member who dies in a theater of operations.
The highly choreographed process follows a specific sequence:
Aircraft Arrival: The remains arrive in a transfer case draped with an American flag.
Carry Team Movement: A carry team composed of service members from the fallen's branch of service carefully carries the remains by hand from the aircraft to a waiting transport vehicle.
Presiding Officer: A senior-ranking officer of the fallen member's branch presides over the transfer.
Transport: Once placed in the vehicle, the remains are transported to the Charles C. Carson Center for Mortuary Affairs (typically at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware) for positive identification and preparation
I love this about our President. He respects the fallen soldiers. It would not surprise me to learn, in the future, he personally reached out to wives, husband's, mother's and father's of fallen soldiers and express his heartfelt gratitude for them giving the last full measure of devotion to this great country.
