It appears that Uvalde was named In 1790, Juan de Ugalde was the Spanish governor of Coahuila, and this part of Texas was part of Coahuila. But somewhere along the was it was Changed to Uvalde from Ugalde. The town, located 85 miles west of San Antonio, has been home to an impressive list of celebrities and politicians. As for the name in this instance, the surname Ugalde is derived from the Basque word "uhalde" meaning "river bank or beach." Thus the surname Ugalde signifies "dweller by a particular or important river bank or beach." Also RIVER WATERWAY or FLOOD.
