The outer edges were made of newer cloth, interspliced, because as the shroud was taken to various places during the middle ages it was displayed simply by holding onto the edges which wore down.

This video is long but worth the time. Without assuming it's authenticity, it is reasonable to begin with the inquiry, Who is the man in the shroud?
