Why: After its closing in 2002 due to pollution, Lake Herrick is finally reopened for recreational, experiential learning and research.

What to expect: Guests at the ceremony will be able to view the lake and walk through the restored landscape and renovated pavilion.

After 16 years of being closed to swimming and boating due to pollution, Lake Herrick behind the University of Georgia intramural fields is reopening Oct. 17.

Lake Herrick was opened in 1982 but later closed in 2002 from fecal coliform bacteria — an indicator bacteria that suggests water contamination from fecal matter. However, revitalization efforts began fall 2017 with goals to reopen the lake to offer recreational, experiential learning and research opportunities.

Now the time has come to reopen the lake more than a decade after its closing. The reopening ceremony will be at 2 p.m.

“This project demonstrates UGA’s commitment to steward natural resources and advance campus sustainability,” said Kevin Kirsche, UGA’s Office of Sustainability director.

The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources has managed the lake and property behind it for the last 35 years, according to dean of the college Dale Greene. The college and its land and facilities manager, Mike Hunter, have overseen the sediment collection pond, which was dug out and expanded to catch sediment upstream of Lake Herrick and keep the sediment from entering the lake.

Pollution was a large factor in closing down the lake, but now, "we’re at a point where we think we can safeguard those who use the lake,” said Todd Rasmussen, hydrology and water resources professor who works closely with Watershed UGA to monitor water quality.

Rasmussen said the water quality of the lake must be monitored to avoid pollution in the future.

Kirsche said UGA plans to form a subcommittee to review and assess current water conditions and to identify strategies as needed to enhance water quality.

“Future phases of construction are envisioned to continue to manage storm water effectively, and engagement efforts are being planned to enhance the health of streams entering Lake Herrick,” Kirsche said.

It is Kirsche’s “secret hope” that “members of the UGA and local community will fall further in love with this place and will continue to protect and restore this and other natural treasures.”

Although motorized vehicles are not allowed, kayaking and stand-up paddling are viable options, Kirsche said.

First arriving to UGA 25 years ago, Rasmussen was able to enjoy Lake Herrick when it was still open. It “was a great resource,” Rasmussen said. “It’s sad they had to close it, but now that they’re reopening it’ll make a great place.”

He hopes to teach classes at the pavilion located there.

Guests at the ceremony will be able to view the lake and walk through the restored landscape and renovated pavilion.

Kennedy, Jr Website waterkeeper.org In 1983, the founding Riverkeeper organization formed around the Hudson River in New York, in response to the untreated sewage and industrial water pollution that was degrading water quality in the river.[3] Today, Waterkeeper Alliance, based in Manhattan, unites all Waterkeeper organizations. The group helps to coordinate and cover issues affecting Waterkeepers that work to protect rivers, lakes, bays, sounds, and other water bodies around the world. In the United States, only 52 of the 180 groups cover watersheds west of the Mississippi River.[4]

In June 2019, the group announced a project with online travel website Culture Trip called "Waterkeeper Warriors." They named 20 activists who “represent the impact one person can make on an issue that affects us all."[5]

Publicity photo Jason Zembuch Young, a drama teacher from South Plantation High School in Plantation, won the 2023 Excellence in Theatre Education Award on Sunday night during the Tony Awards in New York City.

Zembuch Young was honored for his exemplary efforts to broaden access to live theatre, most notably for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Each year, Zembuch Young produces two full-length mainstage productions, a play and a musical, in both voice and American Sign Language.

“As a high school theatre teacher, I’ve had the opportunity to work with many students from different backgrounds with varying exceptionalities. When we are inclusive in the theatre, everyone is better for it. Everyone deserves to have a voice,” Zembuch Young said in a statement. “It is in the theatre that we have an opportunity to give our students a platform to use that voice, regardless of who they are, where they come from or what language they use to communicate.”

Helping others overcome a disability or life circumstances doesn’t stop when the school day ends for Zembuch Young. He and his husband, Michael, have fostered more than 35 abused and underprivileged children. He’s facilitated the adoption of foster children in his care and has become an adoptive parent himself. He offers free admission for foster families to all performances so they can experience live theatre.

A panel of theatre experts from the American Theatre Wing, The Broadway League and Carnegie Mellon University selected Zembuch Young from a nationwide call for entries. The annual Excellence in Theatre Education Award was co-founded in 2014 by the Tony Awards and CMU to recognize top K-12 drama teachers and to celebrate arts education.

CMU alumna and “Into the Woods” actress Denée Benton, along with CMU president Farnam Jahanian and CMU School of Drama head Robert Ramirez, presented Zembuch Young with his award during the Tony Awards ceremony.

“Carnegie Mellon is thrilled to congratulate our alumna who earned Tony Awards this year, and we’re extremely proud of all those who received nominations,” said Farnam Jahanian, president of Carnegie Mellon University. “CMU is grateful to continue playing a critical role alongside the Broadway community in helping the art and business of theatre thrive.”
