Granted, more people lived rural back then, but they were not just "good" people.
They had no subway,no bus,no store on every corner,no EMS.Amazon did not deliver in 3 days.
The phone was a party line at best.Maybe one phone at the general store. Most houses did not have electricity because there were no lines out to them.
Delivery trucks brought diesel, gasoline, oil and kerosene. All water was by well, you serviced it yourself.
What they did have was neighbors.Might be across the field.Might be ten miles. You went anywhere close to them, you checked on them.
You loaned each other fuel, oil, kerosene, vehicles, horses, bulls, tractors and tools. You took each other to the doctor,in to vote,to funerals and weddings,to church. When something broke, you got together and fixed it.You scavenged parts for each other. You added on the house, reroofed barns, moved cattle, harvested crops together. Yes,they were "good"people. But being good is not what made them help each other.Helping each other is what made them good.Favors were a form of trade taken more seriously than money or means.

Soon the feds, through the various alphabet agencies will started coming to your homes. One at a time. They will bring their armored vehicles and their swat teams. They will force you to give up your guns.Perhaps take your child because you wouldn't let them transition. One by one.Perhaps if you and your neighbors had been "good" people it would not occur. The old good worked at being good neighbors, they stayed organized and united. How hard are working at it?
