Tbh though I've known that this was theoretically possible since Jr high. I don't remember which book it was but it basically said in the book that it's theoretically possible. If it's going to happen it would need to be a virus or a fungal infection that takes over the brain. Look up Paul stammets Joe Rogan interview. It's long but there are parts in there where he straight up says that he's not allowed to talk about what the US government is doing with mushrooms and fungus. I think even alludes to the weaponization of it.
