  • President: James Monroe was a Democratic-Republican, this was before the two parties we know today were formed.

  • 1818
  • Missouri Begins Formation A large portion of the state during formation wanted slavery and as the first state west of the Mississippi river, it set off a debate on slavery since the nation was already divided on the issue. At this point in history, Missouri petitions Congress to become a State.

  • 1819
  • South Carolina: Master’s permission required for gun possession by slave This act prohibited slaves outside the company of whites or without written permission from their master from using or carrying firearms unless they were hunting or guarding the master’s plantation. Acts of S.C. 28, 31
  • Tallmadge Amendment: James Tallmadge argued in the Tallmadge Amendment that Missouri should become a free state. This Amendment passed the House but was ultimately defeated.

  • Missouri Compromise There was growing tension over slavery. Congress passes a law essentially banning slavery in the north above Arkansas and Tennissee.
  • International Slave Trade Outlawed Congress adopts legislation identifying the international slave trade as an illegal act piracy, punishable by death
